Teacher: I know that you like to dress beautifully for our school parties. But do you know how to do it?

P1: I’m not always sure, but I like to catch up with fashion.

P2: I like to put on fashionable clothes, too.

Teacher: Can you put on any dress that is in fashion?

Teacher: I suppose this dress with short sleeves is very nice.

P3: Yes, but I prefer loose and long sleeves.

P4: These are dresses, but I prefer jeans and a blouse.

P5: I like jeans too and a white wool sweater.

Teacher: Do you like jeans and sweaters best of all?

P6: You can’t come to a party in a stained and creased dress. But you may look fine in jeans and a sweater.

Teacher: It’s always fashionable to be neat. A pleasant smile goes well with any fashion.

Teacher: I've written an English proverb on the blackboard. It says, «He who knows how to work knows how to rest.» Let us discuss it. Is this proverb always true? Are there any pupils who know well how to rest but know little how to work (to study)? Which in your opinion is more difficult, to learn how to work or to learn how to rest?

P1: I think the proverb is true, really, why not? I can say from my own experience that those people who work well they can rest well. They never sit idle, doing nothing. It's just difficult for them to do nothing. They go in for sports, travel, work in the garden .

P2: Sorry for interrupting you. You said ‘ they work in the garden.’ And we are talking about rest, aren't we?

P1: Well, I'm going to round up. To my mind, the proverb is true. Practically, I can't add anything. Thank you.

P2: I do not agree with this proverb. There are many people who can work well but who cannot spend their free time. They just don't know how or maybe they just do not like to rest. I read somewhere (I don't remember whether in an article or in a book) that Academician Korolyov was so much carried away by his work that he didn't find time for rest, he did not like to rest, he had no hobby. And of course he worked very well. If what I said is true it ruins the English proverb.

P3: On the whole I agree with what was just said. There are different types of people. I know a pupil who is in our class and he can neither study nor rest. He just idles away his time. What would you say about that?

P4: May I say a few words? Well, as far as I can understand the English proverb which we are discussing, it says nothing about those who cannot work. It deals with those who know how to work. Anyhow I agree with those who believe the proverb is not always true. Many people know how to work well but they don't know how to rest well. To arrange a good rest is not so simple, it requires wish or some skill, for instance, playing chess or playing the guitar. People should be taught how to rest, I think. Young people are taught some profession, and they are taught very well, but sometimes nobody shows them how to rest.
